My heart leapt into my throat. What did that doctor see that hadn’t been seen before? I had gone to the emergency room for a minor injury, I was x-rayed, and waited for the doctor. After the consult, at home that evening, I thought nothing more about it. All was well, until the phone rang and that ominous phrase uttered. The spot on my lungs caught the doctor’s eye. Needless to say, I saw my regular physician and pursued a scan immediately! (It was fine – the results were negative. But I wish I hadn’t been alarmed and surprised in quite that way.)
Being proactive about health issues is one of the best pursuits in which we can engage. Eating right, taking vitamins, exercising, and seeing the doctor for check ups are the basic components of a pro-actively healthy lifestyle. But are there additional things to add to that list? The answer is, emphatically, yes!
Currently, we have so many options at our disposal, it’s easy to dismiss the need to look beyond the basics unless something scares you into a test. Taking action early (before any symptoms of a problem appear) can literally mean the difference between life and death. (For current recommendations by U.S. Preventive Services task force, see here.)
“Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in both men and women in the United States.” (American Lung Association citing Centers for Disease Control.)
However, survival rates increase dramatically if the disease is found early. A lung cancer CT scan is a key diagnostic tool for patients and doctors to use for early detection. By being proactive in seeking out a screening, you can take comfort and know that you are using those tools to pursue a longer, healthier life. The screening diagnostics and our caring staff can make this experience a smooth and informative one.
