What is PET/CT?
Like MRI and CT, Positron Emission Tomography, or PET, is an advanced diagnostic imaging procedure. And although PET/CT combines PET and CT into one unit so that it can scan both PET and CT images almost simultaneously, the purpose that each serves is very different.
The PET scan creates an image of how the body is functioning, while the CT scan creates an image of the body’s anatomy. Together, they provide the most accurate test for many types of diseases.
Doctors rely on PET scans to detect changes in a patient’s physiology early on in a number of diseases, most notably cancer. In instances such as these, PET can detect changes in physiology as early as six months to a year before CT or MR can detect changes in anatomy. This allows PET to detect disease in normal-sized structures, determine whether or not a patient’s body is showing an early response to treatment, and even accurately detect disease in regions where post therapeutic change has distorted anatomy.
Put it all together, and you’ll see that Glendale MRI’s PET/CT capabilities offer you and your doctor the most accurate imaging technology available for early detection and diagnosis.
And when it comes to your health, it’s these types of advantages that can make all of the difference in the world.
