Typically, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) exams usually take 15-30 minutes. A recent study, however, found a way to cut that time by as much as 2/3 without compromising the image quality of the scans.
How the Study Was Conducted
In the study, researchers conducted a retrospective review of 50 shoulder magnetic resonance imaging exams on a 1.5-T scanner and 150 shoulder MRI exams on a 3-T scanner. They gathered interpretations from three musculoskeletal radiologists. Sensitivity and specificity was measured for 51 participants who underwent surgery.
Fast Shoulder Protocol Was Shorter than the Standard Protocol
The average time of the fast shoulder protocol was 5 minutes and 23 seconds, compared to the standard protocol average of 14 minutes and 6 seconds. Researchers found that the quality of the fast scan wasn’t sacrificed. Its rate of interreader agreement didn’t decrease by much.
Potential Benefits of Faster MRI Scans
Faster magnetic resonance imaging exams could improve patients’ comfort and tolerability. According to the researchers, the typical 30-40 minute overall time slot for a shoulder MRI could be reduced to 15 minutes. These time frames include setup time, in which it takes on average 10 minutes to set up for the exam. Doctors could get through twice as many magnetic resonance imaging exams each day by using this faster protocol.
Though undoubtedly effective in mapping out diseases in the body, MRI exams have gained the notoriety of being too uncomfortable, especially for patients who can’t stay still. With the faster version of magnetic resonance imaging, patients only have to sit still for about five minutes. Aside from improving patient satisfaction and comfort, this faster protocol allows doctors to conduct more exams in the day.
