Having an MRI can be a nerve-wracking experience, especially if it is your first time having medical imaging done. Most of the nerves are unwarranted since MRIs are non-invasive, do not cause pain of any kind, and do not have any known long term side effects. In this regard MRIs are safer than an x-ray. Most people become nervous about MRIs simply because they don’t know what to expect, but if you prepare yourself ahead of time for the sights, sounds and spaces involved in an MRI you will get through it just fine.
Waiting for results can be difficult for some patients, especially because MRIs are used to diagnose many different kinds of medical issues. As soon as your test is done you may find yourself asking, when should I expect results? Prepare yourself ahead of time, that your test results will take 24-48 hours. Just plan on waiting the full two days to hear anything back from the doctors and then if you happen to hear back a little earlier that’s great, but you won’t be jumping every time the phone rings.
After your MRI scan is complete a Radiologist reads your MRI. They will look for anything abnormal and dictate a full report. The full report is sent to the doctor who will use that report along with the information about your specific symptoms to come up with a full diagnosis. If the report signifies anything unusual, the radiologist and the doctor will often have conversations about the details of the MRI. Your doctor will be the one to give you your results when the full process is complete.
